How Electronic Tolls Work in New Zealand

There are no toll booths or barrier arms. Cameras automatically photograph your front and rear registration number plates as you drive under at normal highway speeds.
⏱️ 5-Day Payment Window
You have up to 5 working days after driving on a toll road to pay online at tollroad.nzta.govt.nz. Unpaid tolls incur a $4.90 NZTA administration fee.
🚗 Rental Cars & Visitors
Most rental car companies in NZ allow you to pay tolls directly online using your plate number. Alternatively, the rental company will charge the toll plus their own admin fee.
